June 30 update from our farmer

Posted 6/30/2020 2:39pm by Jeff Schrimmer.

The next weekly Pickup of the 2020 season will be this Wednesday, July 1st from 5:15pm to 8:00pm at 180 Sussex St.  All food that is not picked up by members will be picked up by the Our Lady of Sorrows Food Pantry at 8pm.

Thank you to all the volunteers who have helped at the pickup site and behind the scenes.  We could not do this without you.  Our volunteers this week will be Federica N, Elizabeth N, and Kevin Y.

There will be a volunteer "sign-up" sheet at the pickup site that you can use to pick your date(s) and time(s) to volunteer or to let us know what other type of volunteering you are interested in doing.  Just a reminder: Farmer John still needs pea pickers at the farm.  You can sign up for that by going to https://signup.com/go/SVUeJCN

Remember that face coverings are mandatory when picking up as well as maintaining a 6 foot distance from others if they are not in your household.  Only one member of your household will be allowed to enter the garage.  Regulations from the Jersey City Department of Health and Human Services can be viewed here: http://www.downtownharvest.org/blog/39286

We are still accepting new members for produce at prorated fees, but John has asked us not to take any new orders for eggs for the time being.

Sincerely, Maria, Phil, Katia, Nancy, Jeff, and Pamela

And, here is an update from our farmer, John Krueger:

Hello Folks,  Since my last writing we received .3 inches of rain. While this was welcome, it was not even close to what we need. We typically look for 1” per week of precipitation, so 3/10 of an inch over three weeks along with significant heat, has left us very dry.  We are moving sprinklers around constantly, laying drip tape over newly planted seeds and generally trying to keep everything possible alive and growing. We just do not have enough water to irrigate everything. The cool weather crops such as spinach and lettuce react to these conditions by bolting- shooting up a seed stalk. We have lost Napa cabbage, radicchio, spinach and many lettuces. The spinach is done now until the fall and the peas are also on their way out.  The good news is that the summer crops are coming on strong.  We will have cucumbers this week for some groups (the rest in next round).  Eggplant and beans will be starting soon.

The share for this week will be: Peas, lettuce, summer squash, one of the following: kale, arugula, broccoli raab or tatsoi, garlic scapes, Swiss chard, beets, and parsley or summer savory.  Full shares will also get a Napa cabbage.

Enjoy!   Farmer John
