Week 13 update from our farmer

Posted 9/1/2020 5:54pm by Jeff Schrimmer.

The next weekly Pickup of the 2020 season will be this Wednesday, September 2nd from 5:15pm to 8:00pm at 180 Sussex St. All food that is not picked up by members will be picked up by the Our Lady of Sorrows Food Pantry at 8pm.

Thank you to all the volunteers who have helped at the pickup site and behind the scenes. We could not do this without you. Our volunteers this week will be Emily O. and Sarah G. (5pm to 6:30pm) and Emily O. and Teresa P. (6:30pm to 8pm)

Full shares are now being delivered in boxes that cannot leave the pickup site.  Please bring your own bags so you can transfer the contents to them. If you have borrowed a reusable bag from us, we ask that you return it.  If you have received items in plastic containers, please return the containers.  Egg share members should also return their cartons.

Remember that face coverings are mandatory when picking up as well as maintaining a 6 foot distance from others if they are not in your household. Only one member of your household will be allowed to enter the garage. Regulations from the Jersey City Department of Health and Human Services can be viewed here: http://www.downtownharvest.org/blog/39286

We are still accepting new members for produce at prorated fees, but John has asked us not to take any new orders for eggs for the time being.

Sincerely,

Maria, Phil, Katia, Nancy, Jeff, and Pamela

And, here is an update from our farmer, John Krueger:

Hi Everyone,

We received .4 inches of rain from the remnants of Laura on Saturday. We may get a little more precipitation tomorrow. Soil moisture is good; seeds are sprouting, and the transplants have taken root. Mostly moderate temperatures are forecast for the week ahead but with some cool nights. Shorter days and cool nights slow down the production of the warm weather crops, such as peppers, eggplant and summer squash. The eggplant production had already dropped off because in extreme heat the plants drop their flowers without forming a fruit. The plants are healthy and loaded with flowers now, but they take longer to mature their fruit and it will be smaller than before. We expect to be able to distribute eggplant one more time, to everyone over the next few weeks. The same is true for the summer squash- the third planting is just beginning to produce. We should have zucchini for you once or twice more before we move into the winter squash. Spaghetti squash is coming soon! We are also working on getting everyone a watermelon over the next several weeks.

The full share for this week will be: Peppers, tomatoes, potatoes, beans, rainbow carrots, radishes, leeks, kale, arugula or tatsoi, basil, and a melon or watermelon.

Enjoy!
Farmer John
