Week 14 update from our farmer

Posted 9/8/2020 12:31pm by Jeff Schrimmer.

The next weekly Pickup of the 2020 season will be this Wednesday, September 9th from 5:15pm to 8:00pm at 180 Sussex St. All food that is not picked up by members will be picked up by the Our Lady of Sorrows Food Pantry at 8pm.

Thank you to all the volunteers who have helped at the pickup site and behind the scenes. We could not do this without you. Our volunteers this week will be Jenn W. and Scott W., (5pm to 6:30) and Kathleen L. and Scott W. (6:30pm to 8pm)

Full shares are now being delivered in boxes that cannot leave the pickup site.  Please bring your own bags so you can transfer the contents to them. If you have borrowed a reusable bag from us, we ask that you return it.  If you have received items in plastic containers, please return the containers.  Egg share members should also return their cartons.

Remember that face coverings are mandatory when picking up as well as maintaining a 6 foot distance from others if they are not in your household. Only one member of your household will be allowed to enter the garage. Regulations from the Jersey City Department of Health and Human Services can be viewed here: http://www.downtownharvest.org/blog/39286

We are still accepting new members for produce at prorated fees, but John has asked us not to take any new orders for eggs for the time being.

Sincerely,

Maria, Phil, Katia, Nancy, Jeff, and Pamela

And, here is an update from our farmer, John Krueger:

Hi Folks,

I hope you had a pleasant and safe Labor Day weekend. Of course, here on the farm every day is labor day, which I suppose is better than every day being Ground Hog day but not as good as every day being Christmas. We’re working hard for you!

The good news for this week is that we have summer squash and zucchini coming in again. The bad news is that our tomato production has plummeted. We will try to get everyone a few more tomatoes over the next couple of weeks. Melons are also done for the season. If you have not had a watermelon yet. We are beginning the winter squash season this week with the spaghetti kind. Hakurei salad turnips are the root vegetable this time around. These are delicious either raw or cooked and have very nice, edible greens. We have several more plantings of corn to mature, so I expect everyone will get sweet corn twice more this season.

The full share for this week will be: Summer squash, beans, arugula or tatsoi, salad turnips, lettuce, shishito peppers, scallions, fingerling potatoes, cipollini onions, peppers, spaghetti squash and basil.

Enjoy!
Farmer John
